END OF STORY by Kylie Scott

New York Times bestselling sensation Kylie Scott’s sexy, smart and unconventional opposites-attract love story looks at what happens when fate refuses to give up on what’s meant to be…

When Susie inherits her beloved aunt’s house, the last person she expects to help renovate it is Lars – her ex’s best friend. The same man who witnessed their humiliating public breakup six months ago. She isn’t exactly eager to have anyone around whose alliance is with the enemy but beggars can’t be choosers and the sooner the repairs are done, the sooner she can get back to embracing singledom.

Things go from awkward to unbelievable when Lars discovers a divorce certificate hidden in a wall and dated ten years in the future – with both their names on it. It couldn’t possibly be real…could it? As Susie and Lars work to unravel the document’s origins, the impossibility of a spark between them suddenly doesn’t seem so far-fetched. But would a relationship between them be doomed before it’s even begun?

A message from the future
Ex problems
Hot damn these two

It’s no secret that I’m a Kylie Scott fan and End of Story demonstrates why so well. This romance is all ease but with plot depth and the right amount of steam. I flew through this book and didn’t want to put it down.

Susie the FMC inherited a house from a close family member and the contractor who came to work on her house was the best friend of her vile ex. Lars was a pretty great guy but he seemed a bit of a light weight in terms of romance at first. There was more to him than that first glance.

Susie was a strong, relatable heroine. She had a tough shell, she didn’t tolerate any BS from anyone. She was the kind of friend you wish for, all loyalty and goodness and inside her heart was huge and soft. Add in a cat called Kat and the appearance of something from outside our time and this became a great hook for the book to be orientated around. The plot was perfect weekend reading material, nothing too heavy but meaty enough.

Scott has released a prequel novella that came at the back of the arc for me, so I’m presuming it will for the finished copy. The prequel filled some gaps in but I wouldn’t have bought it.

Thank you Piatkus Books for the review copy.

FAMOUS IN A SMALL TOWN by Kylie Scott

Here’s a little ‘cover-off’ for you. This approach of a typical romance cover versus a ‘discreet cover’ has caused some contraversy in the romance world. What are your thoughts?

What chance does a small-town girl have with a world-famous rock star?

Two years after his wife’s death, rock star Garrett Hayes hasn’t moved on. But he has moved out of L.A. Where better to escape his past than a small town in the Northern California mountains? If only he could get the townsfolk of Wildwood to leave him the hell alone.

Ani Bennet returned to her hometown for some much-needed serenity. The last thing she needs is a grumpy, too hot for his own good, rich and famous rock star living next door—and rent-free in her brain.

She set her fangirl tendencies aside and deleted his photo off her cell when they became neighbors. But when Garrett asks for help, she can’t say no. The problem is, spending time together is making those fangirl feelings resurface—and bringing them to a whole new level.

What chance does a small-town girl have with world-famous rock star? It’s time for Ani to set her fears aside and find out.

Quick, easy read
Cute with depth
Why so fast?

I want to start by saying I really enjoyed this book despite what the rating might indicate. It came at a time I needed a really easy read and I can rely on Kylie Scott for providing that. This book had a lot of depth, dealing with one character navigating grief after the death of their partner and another with some PTSD.

The small town feels were excellent in this story. A set of warm and eclectic side characters were created to really give a back water feel but also a cosy and desirable vibe to this town. Garrett was an appealing character that we got some depth on but not quite enough. I did like how his grief was represented for most of the book. Ani was also incredibly likeable and I really enjoyed seeing the power dynamic between these two and Ani fully in control despite the fame.

Everything was wholly enjoyable in this book until about 75% in when things went all insta. This book could have been right up my street rating wise if time had been taken to stretch this into a longer and more credible move towards a relatable connection over time. It really shaved some enjoyment off where I was heading in my love for this book. However, I cannot dispute the cuteness of the couple and how it ended.

Would I recommend? Yes, you could read this in a day or afternoon even and enjoy but it won’t be overly memorable for me because of the latter part of the story.

Accidents

Quick fulfilment

I feel like I’m the champion of Repeat by Kylie Scott, I loved that audio and I’ve since re-listened and re-read. So Pause had big shoes to fill and alongside that Leif wasn’t the easiest character like in Repeat having fouled up in his relationship choices bringing consequences.

Pause started with an accident and hospitals which felt reminiscent of Repeat but I didn’t mind that to be honest, as Anna’s story was different enough to feel new. The circumstances she found herself in however, were pretty vile.

I liked hearing about how Anna’s life unraveled and came back together, I perhaps wanted a bit more narrative about her recovery. Anna and Leif had chemistry but it felt pretty fast moving. I enjoyed the story but I wasn’t wowed by it.

This was a quick listen, I would say this is a perfect for a day or a weekend, with great narration. Andi Arndt excels at male dialogue, so while this is a single POV story, when Leif speaks, it feels so credible on the audio.

Thank you to Audible for the early review copy.

THE RICH BOY by Kylie Scott

I’m the type of girl who’s given up on fairy tales. So when Beck – the hot new busboy at work – starts flirting with me, I know better than to get my hopes up. Happily ever afters aren’t for the average. I learned that the hard way.

But how can I be expected to resist a man who can quote Austen, loves making me laugh, and seems to be everything hot and good in this world?

Only there’s so much more to him than that.
Billionaire playboy? Check.
Troubled soul? Check.
The owner of my heart, the man I’ve moved halfway across the country to be with, who’s laying the world at my feet in order to convince me to never leave? Check. Check. Check.

But nobody does complicated like the one percent.

This is not your everyday rags-to-riches, knight-in-shining armor whisking the poor girl off her feet kind of story. No, this is much messier.

Micky’s 2-2.5 star review

Yes, that is my sad face you can see as I am a big Kylie Scott fan. I’ve read all her contemporary books and I love her work. There are a number of reasons THE RICH BOY didn’t work for me and I will try and constructively explain.

The story started out strong, after a short while there was a need to suspend a bit of reality to go with the storyline as the heroine, Alice gave up her life to go and be with Beck after a few days. Even so, I was still invested in these two at this point. However, what I found was a very ’50 shades’ storyline (I’m not going into detail because spoilers), too many coincidental similarities occured but without the sex. It was a slow burn, but I wasn’t invested nor did I understand the need for the slow burn with these two.

Beck was something of a Mal (Stage Dive) character but with some facets I didn’t like. As the story progressed, I struggled with the subtle control Beck had over Alice and her being kept at home. Alarm bells rang in my head a number of times. Even when Alice seemed to revolt, it wasn’t followed through enough for me. There were insta-feelings and insta-more and that just wrecked my investment.

I know this is short and not so sweet and once again, I am sorry about that. I have great love for Kylie Scott’s work but I couldn’t find the heart or soul in this story and I didn’t believe in it. I hope this works for other readers more than it did for me.

Thank you to the author and Social Butterfly PR for the early review copy.

SNEAK PEEK – THE RICH BOY by Kylie Scott

The Rich Boy, an all-new sensational slow burn romance standalone from New York Times bestselling author Kylie Scott is releasing March 9th, and we have the first sneak peek!

Sneak Peek

“All of Me” by Billie Holliday comes on and we neither stop nor speak. We just keep moving to the music. My hands creep up to the back of his neck where his skin is bare and warm to the touch. His eyes are the most amazing shade of hazel. Like some lovesick fool I could stare into them for hours. I don’t think I’ve slow danced with someone since high school. Don’t get me wrong, there have been memorable times in my adult life. I’ve been given roses and taken to dimly lit restaurants. But being here with him is quickly becoming peak romance.

Next is “Lover” by Taylor Swift and we dance on. He doesn’t try to kiss me so I don’t make a move either. There’s no need for more just yet. Doing this, being this close, is beautiful. I want about a hundred more moments like this with him. Possibly a great deal more.

When the music stops we gradually still. And there’s this moment when it’s just me and him and the city around us seems perfectly silent. How good it is to simply be in his arms and to have the full focus of his attentions. To know that maybe, just maybe, I’m safe here with him. The chambers of my heart fill up with him, one by one, and it’s both wonderful and terrifying.

“That was nice,” he says in a low voice.
            “Yes, it was.”

He looks down, taking in the way our bodies are pressed together. “Baby Jesus would be appalled.”

“I do so hate disappointing infant gods.”

“You know, fifty years from now we’re going to look back on tonight and you’re going to regret not taking the opportunity to feel me up,” he says. “Just going for it and grabbing my junk like you own it.”

“Oh my God, Beck.” I laugh. “That was such a perfect romantic moment and you just killed it.”

“I did?”

“Dead and buried.”

He scratches at his head. “Well, shit. I was only being honest.”

“Of course you were.”

With a smile, he takes a step back. I miss him immediately. The heat and the feel of him. The warm and familiar scent of his body. Maybe I should have taken him home last night. Though this slower pace has a sweetness and heat I can’t help but enjoy. Despite the crazy things that come out of his mouth and the insane cravings he inspires in me just by existing. Damn the man.

“So,” he says.

I break out in gooseflesh from the way he looks at me. As if not only am I the only woman in the room (which I am), but quite possibly on the whole damn planet. As I’ve mentioned before, his attention is addictive.

“How about I get the mopping done and then take you on a second date to the diner?” he asks. “See if I can’t bring the romance back to our burgeoning long-term relationship.”

“A second date, huh?”

“It’s a big step, I know. But I think we’re ready. What do you think?”

I nod, my stomach turning upside down. “Let’s do it.”

I had a bad day one friday before release of this book and needed an easy, complete story to drift into and away with. CLOSER took me from my life and wrapped me up in the engaging story of Mae and Ziggy. Following on from Strong, the precursor novella from 1001 Dark Nights, it has a bodyguard context with plenty of Stage Dive characters for good measure.

Mae was a model with a nasty package waiting for her when she returned from an assignment. Ziggy was the stoney-faced, gorgeously suit-clad close protection officer ‘bodyguard’ assigned to her. He was all ‘Miss Cooper’ and never cracked a smile. I really don’t want to say more than this about the actual story as this is a novella you can read in an hour and half, so you want all the good bits without any spoilers.

Bonus elements to this novella included a dash of this and a dash of that. There was chemistry for days with lots of uncertainty. There was slight suspense element and in the length of a novella there was slow burn, but not necessarily in days. Scott manages to avoid insta-love very well.

This is a novella on the shorter side yet it feels to be a complete story with detail and satisfaction as a reader. There is definite skill pulling this length of book off and Kylie Scott did. I will definitely re-read this when I need a quick, easy and satisfying romance.

Thank you to the author and Social Butterfly PR for the review copy.

Micky’s 4.5 star review

Every single thing about this read was unexpected, even taking the unusual synopsis into mind. This was a fast-paced, thrilling romance with bucket loads of story and plenty of twists. It was also consistently amusing with characters I couldn’t help but be pretty enamoured with.

What is super interesting about this story and how it starts, is that the ‘going wrong’ part of the relationship happens right at the beginning, in unholy style. So, you could almost call this a second chance kind of story but at break-neck speed. It was like a cross between a snarky, funny romance and ‘Die Hard’. Interested?

The heroine, Betty is unconventional, partly because she starts her journey with taking no more messing from Thom. She was over him, the relationship and she was empowered. Everything spiraled from there and Betty was resilient, strong but with heart. I loved her snark, her refusal to be put in a corner and I read about her with total interest.

There’s a crack in the ceiling high above my head. Fitting, given that there’s an even bigger and even more destructive fault line running smack bam through my life. Move over, San Andreas, Thom Lange has you beat.

Thom was definitely the character to be revealed but also I felt pretty distrustful of him, with a slice of ‘why are you so swoony’? It made for addictive reading watching these two connect for the second time. It took me time to believe in him and I understood Betty’s anger towards him.

Thom is basically a machine. Like some killer robot sent from the future to fuck up my love life.”

Alongside the great storyline was a tangible chemistry that also made for compelling reading. Everything about this read was addictive and I read it in less than 24 hours. The twists kept coming and from 80% my jaw was dropped and I was suspicious. This story was an unusual and welcome offering from Kylie Scott who has amazed me with her ingenuity on this one.

Thank you to Social Butterfly PR and Kylie Scott for the early copy.
