WILDFIRE by Ilona Andrews

Just when Nevada Baylor has finally come to accept the depths of her magical powers, she also realizes she’s fallen in love. Connor “Mad” Rogan is in many ways her equal when it comes to magic, but she’s completely out of her elements when it comes to her feelings for him. To make matters more complicated, an old flame comes back into Rogan’s life…

Rogan knows there’s nothing between him and his ex-fiance, Rynda Sherwood. But as Nevada begins to learn more about her past, her power, and her potential future, he knows she will be faced with choices she never dreamed of and the promise of a life spent without him.

As Nevada and Rogan race to discover the whereabouts of Rynda’s kidnapped husband and are forced to confront Nevada’s grandmother, who may or may not have evil motives, these two people must decide if they can trust in each other or allow everything to go up in smoke.

Micky’s 4.5 star review

I love that this Hidden Legacy series is paced a little faster than the Kate Daniels series, what I mean is that the longer storylines are happening over less books. Its not that I don’t appreciate all ten books and novellas of the KD series, but I was ready for a little less commitment. WILDFIRE moved Nevada into a new position in this book, secure in her relationship and becoming the leader of her family in a more formal way. Both these elements made me love this book.

First and foremost for me in this series, is the Nevgan (awful ‘ship’ name alert). These two continued to dig through who they were together and where their boundaries sat. What I love about Connor (Rogan) is how he was selfless and both selfish in his love, that said, he had the balance just right as situations presented. These two got to have a date in this book and I lived for that experience. I think I am possibly too hung up on these two…

“I’m starving. I haven’t had anything to eat since I stole a bear claw from your kitchen this morning.”
“You didn’t steal it. All my bear claws are yours.”

The whole storyline about the becoming of a House was fascinating and the reveals about the youngest Baylor sister and Leon were pretty wow. The baddies were fierce and I definitely saw parallels between Grandma Tremaine and Kate Daniels father – the strong, evil patriach/matriach but with a dose of they might care a bit.

I am hugely excited for where the next book goes. I need more of this family but more importantly more of ‘Nevgan’ (sorry). They’re not quite Kate and Curran but probably only because I don’t know them quite as well. Ilona Andrews know how to create a story, a couple to last and cheer for.

BURN FOR ME by Ilona Andrews

#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire…

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

Micky’s 4.5 star review

So the quality of the Kate Daniels series wasn’t a fluke, huh? Here I am (I’d apologise but I’m not sorry) yet again spouting about these authors. They basically hooked me in with book one of this new to me series that I already feel addicted to.

The world is different in the Hidden Legacy series, still urban fantasy but a different city and a world more like ours. The parallels between them and us felt closer but the magic in this world was not. Surprise, surprise…not!

Nevada Baylor is not a carbon copy of Kate Daniels and that’s good news because I’m ready for a fresh set of characters. She’s kind of ordinary, full of backbone, guts and determination to keep the family busines and her family themselves safe.

It took some time to work out who the main male character was going to be in this tale. Adam Pierce? Mad Rogan? Augustine? This was no love triangle though, so don’t panic. I have to say please, please let book two do away with the Mad in Mad Rogan, it got a little irritating, call him Rogan or Connor.

There’s less nasty monsters so far in this series and I didn’t the familiar skin crawl I often got reading the Kate Daniels books. However, the humans with magical powers had their freaking scary moments. The pacing and action was superb, the romance was a delicious slow burn of which I need more.

I am a fan immediately of this book and will now start the familiar battle to not devour the series but rather slowly digest.

And the best series award goes to… Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews

Micky here. The Kate Daniels series has been a non-labour of love for me this year. After about 2.5 years of Hollis telling me to read this, gifting me book one, I finally bit the bullet and started MAGIC BITES (see what I did there). From that point on, it has been a lesson in restraint as I would have liked to have binged the series one book after another. What I’ve done in the main is one or two per month. I actually think this has made me enjoy it more, savouring the stories, anticipating the next…

If you don’t know anything about the series, let me enlighten you. This is a paranormal/fantasy series with the most kick-ass heroine I have ever adored – Kate Daniels herself. This is a world of crazy, powerful magic and Kate is an elusively special person, you don’t know for quite a while who or what she is but that’s all part of the charm. She is full of snark and humour, she’s super strong, honed like a weapon but she has a heart that shows sometimes. This is a world of shapeshifters, vampires (like you’ve never known them before), witches and many weird and powerful beings, good, bad and definitely ugly. I also want to say as a bit of a scaredy cat, this series can be pretty gory.

There is a love story woven through this series but I am not going to say who. It is deliciously slowly burning and it has taken my breath away many times. However, let me just say, the love story is rarely in the fore, it is the foundation and it is superb.

This is a series with Kate at the fore in the main books and quite a number of novellas, usually dedicated to the side characters, many of whom I love and was delighted to get some focus on. We have put a series list at the bottom for anyone wanting to know the series reading order.

Hollis, you know this series better than me, having read then re-read it. Give us you thoughts, musings and adoration please.

I mean, I can’t say it better than Micky herself already has. This series really has something for everyone. For the die hard PNR or UF fans, those who are fascinated by other cultures and the various mythology and folklore and want to see more than the standard Irish/Celtic infusions come out to play, for the modern day snark and humour, and definitely the Shippiest of Shippy couples. And there are a lot of them!

For me, though, I think what makes this series so great, and so enduring, and definitely rereadable, is the ensemble cast. Not only do these authors offer up novellas and extras but the non-leads get plenty of time in the main books, too. They triumph, they suffer, they find love, they lose it, they die, all alongside Kate. They are an integral part of her and her world and they make it all the richer for it. Sometimes they are her friends, sometimes they are in her way, and sometimes bonds are tested and may break. But it’s always interesting, often fun, and occasionally heartbreaking. Also, there are plenty of cameos. Thought this one character was nothing more than a footnote in a random scene and you’ll never see them again? Hah! Guess again. The eater eggs, the follow ups, the relevance to the big picture.. it’s all meticulously planned. It’s scary, really.

If you want a series that will make you laugh (and laugh and laugh.. and laugh), cry, will creep you out, break your heart, and have you clamouring for more, you definitely need to give Kate Daniels and her crew a try. And, once you’ve run out of things to read (because sadly this is our reality now..), there are plenty other fascinating and funny series by these authors still to try.

Micky’s 4 star review but I declare this series a 5 star series overall!

I could have read this book a month ago but I have been putting off getting to the end. I have loved the whole reading experience of Kate Daniels and her world and I did not want it to end. Now it has ended, it is bittersweet but I am immensely fond of the world and the characters and remain in hatred with the monsters, bugs, creatures and evil things. There might be the odd, mild spoiler but nothing beyond what is revealed in the synopsis

MAGIC TRIUMPHS starts with an addition to the family. It was amazing to me how this weaved into the world and family so naturally. I found this element such fun and somewhat anxiety-provoking. Kate and Curran remained themselves through these changes, until they didn’t.

Roland was a definite menace in this book (like he hasn’t been for many of the books, eye roll) but it seemed to be coming to a head. There was, however a more impending threat and I really enjoyed the story/quest to this book. Apart from the soup, no one can enjoy the soup.

Bringing back characters and tying up storylines was a joy to read. In this book, Hugh finally moved a centimetre or two in my esteem, marginal but it was there. There were some reveals that gave me final understanding moments about characters and others that just made my heart sing. But do not be fooled, there was angst, terror and menace galore as usual.

I have given this read 4 stars because it wrapped up oh so fast. I was at 92% thinking how can this finish in time and there was a lack of detail and depth in that final ending for me. BUT I am satisfied completely in the final feeling of completing the series. This is my favourites series ever for these reasons: longevity, character development and kickass characters. Watch out for my blog feature coming with kudos and homage to all things Kate Daniels. I am determined to pass on the favour and make even more Kate Daniels fans of some bookworms.

Hollis’ 4.5 star review

Was this everything I wanted it to be? Can I get a hell yeah? Did I love this Catalina-centric installment more than the Nevada-centric ones? Really.. long.. pause.

Maybe?

It’s been a while but I do have great memories of the trilogy that kicked this series off. And yet for some reason this one just shines a little more brightly. And not only because it’s obviously fresh in my mind.

Other kids were encouraged to be cute, to perform for adults. If I smiled, the adults became mesmerized, and if I wanted them to like me, they would love me with obsessive intensity.

Catalina’s struggles, and her struggles with her magic, just felt.. interesting. Fresh. Exciting. Her power is different and that gives her role something a little different. The love interest was a flipping delight, too. There are so many layers to Alessandro and I loved how they played off each other.

I found your vomit muffin. He’s driving a crappy silver Italian import. He’s about to merge on the 1-10. Where are you?
In the passenger seat of the crappy import.
This is a great car.”

I enjoy the politics and the messiness of this warped world. All the side characters, too. Honestly there isn’t much I didn’t love. The only thing keeping this back from a full five stars is some of the intensity of Catalina’s feelings. I get she’s been invested for a while, and also somewhat resigned to a complicated future romance, if any, but it did come off strong. She was just very in it when it wasn’t really a thing to be in yet? Hard to describe. But it only came off weird a few times. For the rest? I was quite pleased.

But what would I do alone for hours with no one to admire me?
Take selfies, kill random people, take selfies of you killing random people?
Is that why you think I’m not a good person?
No, lots of people take selfies. You just do it more than most.

I have so many questions about where things are building, who is hiding what, and the authors did tease some things that I’m sure are to be revealed down the road. Hell, I’m still waiting for the reveal from the epilogue of book three. Did we get that? I can’t remember. Suffice it to say there’s so much more for this series to give us, so many places it can go, and I’m delighted there’s so so many characters that could take us to all these yet-uncharted areas. Want, need, more. But I always say that. These authors rarely, if ever, fail to deliver.

I don’t know if you know, but Leon is psycho. I heard him talking to himself when shooting people. He used funny voices, Catalina.
Your brother thinks he’s a werewolf.
Good point.

I’m so so excited for more of this world and it was such a delight to slide into an Andrews in this post-Kate Daniels world.

** I received an ARC from the author (thank you!) in exchange for an honest review. **

MAGIC BREAKS by Ilona Andrews

No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…

As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.

As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…

Holy Curran, Hugh and Roland on a cracker. What an insane read that was considering I struggled with the pacing initially but I ended up loving it.

Ilona Andrews had a whole spiel at the beginning of this book that heralded the unexpectedness of where it ended but I didn’t expect THAT. What a story of trial and tribulation this was with Kate showing her vulnerability and strength synonymously. There were passages that made my heart ache and eyes leak because I’ve become so damn attached to the characters in this book; so attached (shakes head at myself, already mourning the end of this series). I also felt the loss of an inanimate (questionable) object very keenly in this book and the substitution didn’t wholly comfort.

There were newer characters at the fore in MAGIC BREAKS that has me questioning where they might fit in future books, particularly Robert, Dessandra and Cuddles. Someone hold my sides, because I have a snickering attachment to Cuddles. Old favs also were there, bringing the banter and I adore Andrea, Derek, Christopher, Doolittle and Barabas. Talking of Andrea, how her and Kate communicate just gets me.

“Of course they’ll be fine.”
We looked at each other and made a silent effort to believe our own bullshit.

So if you thought you knew who was the baddie and who are the goodies, get ready to challenge those ideas because MAGIC BREAKS will break your freaking mind over this. When can I read the next?
